Tips & Tricks: Software version specification for support cases

In the daily handling of support cases, the version specifications of the affected software components are an essential information. In order to process your support request efficiently, it is important for the support analysts to know which version of the software is causing your problem.

On the one hand, these details avoid unnecessary additional consultation on our part and on the other hand, we are able to resolve dependencies correctly and to select the right combination for possible testing. Discover how and where you can find the version information.

Usually it is sufficient to specify the main version (major version). For example GEONIS 5.4 or GEONIS server 2017 Service Pack 1. This information is important regarding the choice of media and the availability of various functions. In addition, the system requirements and compatibilities vary between the main versions. This allows us to quickly determine which media and functions are supported in the concerned software version and which ones are not. We therefore recommend that you notify us about the main version in your support request.

If third-party software is used and this is part of your request, the respective major version is also helpful here. For example:

  • ArcGIS 10.6.1
  • FME Desktop 2019.1
  • MS SQL Server 2019
  • Java OpenJDK 11

If there are irregularities in a product with a large selection of builds (e.g. WebOffice), or if there are variations within an extension, a complete specification of the version including build number may be necessary, as in the example:

  • Windows 10 Build 17134
  • WebOffice 10.6 R2 SP2 20190709
  • GEONIS View
  • GEONIS Module Profile NG 2.2.441.11802

A basic distinction is made between desktop and server/web applications. All other components fall into the third party software category (e.g. Java).

The following overview is provided to help you find the version information:

1. Desktop

GEONIS expert

In the desktop application the GEONIS main menu displays an overwiev of all version information.

  • Click on the menu button “Help” and select “Support Information”

It is also possible to show the version specifications via GEONIS Administratior.

  • All you need to do is open the GEONIS Administrator and click the “Version/Information” tab

In addition to the software overview of Windows (programs and features), the version of GEONIS gear can be shown directly.

  • Just click on “Info” in the menu

Industry Model

The versions of the respective media (ELE, WAS, FW, SEW, AV) can be read from the XML files.

In the cadastral survey solution it is also interesting to know whether a cantonal solution is involved or not. The version of FME is important for cases involving GEONIS Dataconverter (see third-party providers).

GEONIS server

The exact version of GEONIS server can be found under the following URL:

  • https://<Your-GIS-Server>:6443/arcgis/rest/services/ GEONISserverSOE2017/MapServer/exts/ GEONISserver2017/administration/GetVersion

For details on GeonisServerSOE and MapServiceConnector, see Site > Extensions in the ArcGIS Server Manager.

In the Windows software overview, you can find information about the version of GEONIS Web Adaptor.

Geocom License Server

The interface of the Geocom License Server Administrator shows the version directly in the title bar.

Below you will find information on further software components:

ArcGIS Desktop

Select “About ArcMap” from the main menu under the tab “Help” to display the installed version. In addition, the Esri Patch Finder offers you an overview of all installed patches and updates.

ArcGIS Enerprise

You can find your ArcGIS Enterprise version under the following URL:

For support cases or feature requests in connection with SynerGIS WebOffice, the details of the build (i.e. the creation time of the update package) can also be helpful for the support analyst. SynerGIS continuously publishes improvements for various WebOffice components, so errors can already be fixed in the following build. There are two ways to view the version information in the system:

  • One is via the Synadmin in the tab “License” or directly via the menu in your open project

The version of your enterprise geodatabase can be shown directly by right-clicking → Properties. The information can also be queried using SQL.

  • Example Microsoft SQL Server: select * from [dbo].[SDE_version]
  • Example Oracle: select * from sde.version

Microsoft SQL Server / Oracle Database

If your support case refers to a database system from Microsoft or Oracle, a concrete specification of the version used is also necessary here. The corresponding details can be queried directly in the database. If you do not have the corresponding authorizations, you can transfer the respective queries to your responsible person:

  • Example Microsoft SQL Server: select @@VERSION;
  • Example Oracle: select * from v$version;

Apache Tomcat

No matter if you use map.apps or WebOffice as WebGIS, they are usually operated with Apache Tomcat. For the version information there is a version.bat in the directory “bin”.

The version is also visible in the Tomcat Manager.
